Saturday in San Diego

We were watching an episode of How It's Made and the topic was hot dogs. Despite being slightly grossed out by how they were made, we knew what we were having for lunch. However, D. suggested that we head in a much higher-quality direction and pick up handmade bratwursts from Sausage King in the Mission Hills area.

When the customer next to me started asking about the sliced cold cuts in the case, I noticed one that looked like a meat and egg mosaic. It was headcheese and the man helping us (the owner, I think) mentioned that their headcheese was stabilized naturally, without an external source of gelatin. They made their headcheese with bits of hard-boiled egg yolk.

After paying at their awesome old-school cash register, we headed out and Venissimo Cheese was kitty-corner to Sausage King. We stopped in and picked up their Ewephoria and some Shropshire blue.

Since we were in the neighborhood, we headed to Bread and Cie for bread. French baguette for the headcheese and cheese, French demi baguettes for the sausages.

Lots of delicious food from local purveyors, all less than a mile from each other.

How was the bratwurst?

Topped with sauteed sweet onions and warmed store-bought sauerkraut, it was delightful.

Very cool! I thought the boiled egg was unusual but makes sense now that you explained. I really like the weisswurst but you gotta eat it the day purchased. Not defending the mass producing hot dog industry in any way but I think a lot of things are groty when the process is described in detail to most..

Nice! We should have been to sausage king more being just around the corner. I understand that it is a family business and once they give up there is no one to inherit it, so enjoy it while you can!!

Sausages are disgusting when you make them yourself, we did it in class once. I got away lightly by making seitan ones but the class were all grossed out with the meat ones!!
