El Cajon Oktoberfest

This weekend, we went to the El Cajon Oktoberfest, hosted by the German American Societies of San Diego. It was a great event with lots of fantastic food. Only here for one more weekend, it's definitely worth a stop for some fantastic food and beer. The oom-pah band is awesome and everyone there takes the Chicken Dance pretty seriously.

Bratwurst, grilled oxtail, potato salad, blaukraut (red cabbage), sauerkraut, giant pretzels, kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes), and lots of beer are available and delicious. Grab food and hang out at the numerous tables while watching the band. They yodel, they play the accordion, and an alphorn made an appearance.

The pastries are absolutely amazing. We tried one that was largely whipped cream in the middle; it was sandwiched between two thin slices of sponge cake and topped with an thick layer of almonds and honey. Another winner was the lemon jelly roll. There was black forest cake and fruit tart among other options.

This coming weekend is the last weekend for Oktoberfest, so head out and enjoy some great eats and drink. Just in case it's as hot and sunny next weekend as it was this weekend, the entire area is shaded, but I still strongly suggest bring water bottles and sunscreen.

Sadly, I have not been celebrating Oktoberfest these last few years. But looking at the wonderful pastries makes me realize that my life is empty without a slice of a lemon jelly roll.
