Happy 30th Birthday, D.!!

Do you remember that American Express commercial? It featured a serious redheaded boy named Randy. For the life of me, I can't find that commercial online.

(two kids in a convenience store)

"Hey Randy, want to split a Twinkie?"

(shakes head, speaks with gravitas) "No, I'm saving for retirement."

I always tease D. that he was like that little kid. He's been talking about saving for retirement since I've known him. He's not impulsive or immature. He's careful, thoughtful, and always thinking of the big picture. I was walking with his mom once, many years ago, and made an offhand comment about how D.'s 22 going on 35. His mother paused and I was afraid I'd offended her. Then, she said, "Well, he's been going on 35 since he was fourteen."

Well, folks, this is the year. He's finally breaking into his 30s. D. and I are the same age, so we're ringing in our 30th birthdays in 2011. He's up first and 30 requires a truly amazing cake.

I asked Jenny, of Foray Into Food and Jennywennycakes, to make his birthday cake. Inspired by this cake that has gone viral, I wanted something to celebrate D.'s obsession with the game. He doesn't just play it... he's been making a project of scoring three stars on every single level so he can unlock a golden egg.

What? Yeah, I'm not sure about that, either.

Jenny did a fantastic job capturing the birds in their neverending war against the pigs. This isn't the first Jennywennycake that's rung in a big occasion for us. Jenny made our wedding cakes. Five cakes of different flavors (red velvet, yellow cake with choclate frosting, lemon curd and blueberry, carrot, and chocolate) arranged on cake stands. To this day, people still bring up the cakes, so we know who to call when we need a gorgeous cake for a special occasion.

The slingshot is fully functional, made by Jenny's husband out of copper piping and covered in fondant. It looks too good to eat! D.'s thrilled... about the cake, not necessarily about turning 30, but something tells me that the Dirty Thirties (tm my friend T.) will be a lot of fun.

Happy birthday, D.!!

And now it's T-minus 2 months until my 30th... gulp!

If you're interested in Jenny's cakes, visit her Facebook page, her blog, her Flickr stream, or email her at jennywennycakes {at} gmail {dot} com. Check out this awesome birthday cake she did for fellow blogger Caninecologne at Pink Candles at Ridgemont High.

That cake should win a prize. It's seriously amazing. Tell D that my 5 year old only needs to finish level 7. He's done all the other levels. The two would like each other a lot.

Wow, that was quick! I'm so glad you liked it, I really wanted to get the catapault working so he could use it! Its a little intimidating making a cake for an enthusiast but it's very rewarding when it comes out well!

My thirties have treated me pretty well so far, hopefully you guys will find the same! Happy birthdays!

Pubcakes is being sold at UCSD, which I'm super-excited about b/c I'm on campus occasionally. Just had another Cup O' Hefen and it's to-die-for.
