Tierra Miguel CSA

We joined the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) at Tierra Miguel Foundation this year. The appeal lay with locally grown and organic veggies that change from box to box. If we pay a pretty penny for vegetables we don't normally eat, then we're going to figure out how to eat them.

This week's box contained carrots.

Arugula, which was a bit too old (old as in mature, not rotting) for my liking.

Beets. What the hell do you do with beets? That's the question of the week.

Bok choi that isn't too mature. It can be rather tough when it's older growth.

Rosemary, which is thick enough for skewering. Lamb rosemary skewers, perhaps?

Mandarin oranges. Last week's Naval oranges were incredible. I have high hopes for these.

Broccoli. We've received broccoli three times now and each bunch has been different. I didn't realize there were so many varieties of broccoli.

Lemons and onions.

Great big heads of lettuce and cauliflower.

Lastly, red potatoes.

What am I going to do with this? Aloo gobi!

I just moved to San Diego and when we got here I almost signed up for a CSA. Then I thought about all the farmer's markets I hadn't yet explored and I decided I would wait a while before making a decision about the CSA. But I love seeing the photos of what people receive in their boxes!

As for the beets, my aunt always pickles them by first boiling them then cutting into chunks and dousing them with vinegar and a little sugar I think. I'd have to ask to get the exact recipe. They are great after a few hours in the fridge! I also have an interesting recipe for some chocolate muffins I made using beet puree. Sounds weird, I know. But they were super good!

Welcome to SD, Nicole! Your blog's beautiful! I might have to try those muffins because we're getting beets semi-regularly, so I know I'm going to have to find lots of creative uses for it.
